Sock Club will meet Monday, January 18th at 5:30 pm.

Tuesday’s visit with Janel Laidman (author, designer, and all-around sock guru) left us inspired and re-energized! And after seeing her creations first-hand we are eager to tackle the patterns in her most recent book The Enchanted Sole. (This month’s sock, ‘Tintagel’, is featured on the cover).

Join us on Monday to begin our ‘Enchanted’ Sock Adventure! You’ll need size 2 needles and 4mm beads. We still have signed copies of this book on hand if you don’t already have one. (If you missed the book signing, don’t despair! A little bird told us we may see Janel in the very near future!)

New to Sock Club?

Sock Club dues are $10.oo monthly for which you receive a $10.oo shop credit that may be applied to any item in the shop. The credit must be applied on the night that Sock Club meets.

Everyone is welcome to join, but we do ask that you have a working knowledge of knitting socks. If you’ve never made socks before, consider our upcoming sock classes:

Basic Socks on DPN’s beginning on January 16th. (Second session begins February 26th) This class is for those true sock newbies.

“My First Pair of Grown-Up Socks” beginning on February 8th. This class will build on skills learned in the Basic Sock class. You’ll knit an easy, adult-sized sock using some variations of the basic sock pattern.

Holy Circs, Sockman! Four classes beginning on March 16th. This class is for advanced sock knitters.

Refer to your newsletter or call the shop for more information.

Are you ready to add some spice to your knitting?  Do you think afghans are boring?  Well, prepare to change your mind!  For the next 24 months, we will be working our way through the Great American Afghan from Knitters (Ravel It).  To make the most of our monthly meetings, we will be announcing the square prior to the meeting to allow you to get started.  Then, bring your square and your questions to the club.

Since we are just getting started, the BOTM for September will be #25 by Nancy Bush.  You will need worsted weight yarn and needles to achieve a gauge of 5 stitches per inch (approx. a U.S. size 7).  If you have not yet done so, be sure to pick up your copy of The Great American Afghan-2007 Edition in the shop.  Our first meeting will be September 7th.  (We realize it is Labor Day, but had enough people who wanted to meet anyway.  We chose a fairly easy square for this month, so if you can’t make the first meeting, don’t panic.)

If you are interested in the knitted Block of the Month Club, please call the shop at 734-8800 and get on the club list.  This will allow us to keep track of all members for updates and announcements.  Remember, there is a $10 fee per month for clubs that you receive back as credit to spend in the shop that night.  We hope to see you there!

This Tuesday, we will be focusing on mending.  Got a sweater with a hole in it?  Did the puppy use your new cardigan as a tug toy?  What about that sweater you made 20 years ago that he has worn to death?  Pull out that bag of sweaters and learn how to bring your hand-knit garments back to life!  Mending is a skill that no knitter should be without.

This Tuesday, we will be focusing on sock darning.  You’ve spent all that time knitting socks and now they have a hole.  What do you do?  Or even worse, your nephew feeds a hand knit sock to the dog.  How do you repair that hole without re-knitting the entire sock?  Don’t despair, you can darn them! (And we don’t mean Chelsea’s method of throwing the socks on the floor and shouting, “Darn!”)  Learn this valuable technique and never throw out a hand knit sock again.

Summer is nearly here and soon the kids will be out of school.  Why not make good use of their extra time by teaching them how to knit?  We’ve just received two I Taught Myself to Knit kits featuring favorite Disney characters.

Each kit comes with instructions for several fun projects, needles, and notions.  Spend some quality time with your kids/grandkids/nieces/nephews while sharing the craft you love.
